Royal BC Museum McAbee Fossil Collection
The Royal BC Museum recently accepted a massive collection of fossils from the McAbee fossil beds located near Cache Creek in BC’s southern interior. Donated this year by the families of respected amateur collectors John Leahy and David Langevin, this astounding collection contains 18,000 pieces that are 52 million years old. The site of the McAbee fossil beds was formerly an ancient lake which received official heritage designation in 2012. Katie McEvoy, Assistant Paleontology Collections Manager, explains how the collection is managed, catalogued and stored at the museum.
