Acknowledging Past Wrongs
Wall Poems
From 1909–1923, some newly arrived Chinese immigrants were detained in cells in the Federal Immigration Detention Hospital in Victoria, BC, while government officers sorted out their paperwork. On the walls that detained them, early Chinese immigrants wrote poems. The poems expressed their hopes for their new land, their thoughts of family and homeland, and their sorrows and anger over their treatment.
