BC’s First Marriage License

The first page of BC’s first marriage license. “No. 1” appears in the top right hand corner of the license and Lieutenant-Governor Trutch’s signature at the bottom. Until 1924, marriage licenses in BC were issued “under the hand and seal” of the Lieutenant-Governor. Initially this meant actually signing them. Read about the love story behind the first marriage license here.  Learn more about the role of BC’s lieutenant-governors on the Royal Treatment Pathway.  View BC’s first marriage license on the Royal BC Museum’s 100 Objects of Interest site.
